Meditation, kung fu, pilates, stomp 'n' sculpt, yoga and time in the sauna to top it off. This may sound like an expensive day at the spa, but these invigorating classes are now at the Aztec Recreation Center along with many others that can kick start your body into better fitness and health. The ARC offers group fitness and recreation classes that are perfect for mixing up your workout routine and maybe even targeting those neglected muscles. Group fitness and recreation classes offer an alternative to hopping on an elliptical machine. "I love to join these classes for a good workout and the great group atmosphere," civil engineering senior Joe Fontana said. "If I'm not feeling weights or straight cardio workouts, they're a great alternative." Classes such as turbo-kickboxing are challenging because of the intense cardio training and muscle toning mixed with throwing combinations of kicks and punches at the air. Along with kickboxing, there are workouts for virtually every part of the body - from getting a lower body workout with Salsa class to muscular toning with core conditioning. They all provide different means to achieve the same goal: a healthier lifestyle. Every day, groups such as sororities and dormmates are taking advantage of these classes. All the mind and body workouts are free for ARC members but because of their attractiveness, they do fill up quickly, depending on popularity and the time of day. Arrive at the classes a few minutes early to ensure a spot. "Turbo-kickboxing seems to always fill up," information and decision systems services and international business senior Julianne Haitz said. "You have to come a little early to grab a ticket to enter the class, and we usually run out." During a regular day at the ARC, classes from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. get the most traffic. Other time slots rarely run out of room. Along with group fitness classes, the ARC also offers recreation classes such as meditation, kung fu, swimming and tennis lessons. These classes require a one-time fee, ranging from $35 to $150 depending on choice of class and desired duration. Some of the classes are already underway, but interested members can still join classes in early March. To join any of the classes, head to the ARC or sign up online at www.arc.sdsu.edu. Class times are usually Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a few slots on the weekend. All information is posted on the ARC's Web site. These classes are a great way to mix up your workout and the monotony of treadmill and sit-up workouts. With all the options the ARC has to offer, fun and valuable workouts are waiting for you right here on campus.
