"No brakes - just one, long continuous song to us."

Mario Rubalcaba of psychedelic rock, jam band Earthless applied this description to the band's live performances for last year's local bands feature.

No brakes is right.

Earthless played its second consecutive year at the "South By South West Music and Media Conference and Festival" in Austin, Texas.

"This year was a lot better than last year," guitarist Isaiah Mitchell said in an interview. "We got a year to build up a lot of stuff - more people got turned on to us, we played a little longer and met a lot of great bands."

SXSW isn't the only festival the band is playing this year.

Last month, Earthless played the "Roadburn Festival" in Tilburg, Holland.

The "Roadburn Festival," which is described on its Web site as "a celebration of tube-driven distortion and crackling electric guitars," features other similar instrumental rock musicians or jam bands such as ISIS and Neurosis' Scott Kelly.

Mitchell said Earthless will later embark on a West Coast tour with Tee Pee Records labelmates Graveyard, but that it's still in the works.

Playing gigs are all that's going on for now because Mitchell said the band isn't recording just yet.

"We're writing, sort of testing the waters," he said. "There's a possibility that a new record could be released before the year's up."

A new record may be awhile, but Earthless just completed a split, seven-inch record - released through Volcom's record label - with another Tee Pee Records band, Witch.
