If there is one word to define local band, The Silent Comedy, it's definitely "versatile." The Silent Comedy finds itself smack in the middle of the indie-folk movement. Hitting the mark between storytellers and forlorn rockers, the band showcases its ability to deftly tread the water of vaudevillian folk without pretense on their second EP. Straying from the guitar/bass/drums template, The Silent Comedy thankfully pursues the use of more imaginative instrumentation. J. Benedict plays the drums, but he doubles and triples on vibraphone and trombone. With stories hearkening back to Dust Bowl nights spent around a campfire with some whiskey and a banjo, The Silent Comedy is spot-on. Give the band time to stew in the San Diego scene and it'll make a name for itself nationally. If you want to catch it before then, The Silent Comedy hits the stage at 9 p.m. on Friday at Belly Up Tavern.
