Academy Award-winning writer Martin McDonagh makes his directorial debut in a slapstick dark comedy called "In Bruges." This is not your average hit man movie. With his history of creating phenomenal playwrights, such as "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" and "The Pillowman," McDonagh comes forth with one emotional roller coaster of a film that can only be described as gut-wrenching and terribly intriguing. The movie begins in London with a narration by an unknown character giving away shallow details of what seems to be a murder. We later come to find out that the narrator is a hit man by the name of Ray (Colin Farrell) who is on his way to secluded, yet tragically beautiful, Bruges with fellow hit-man Ken (Brendan Gleeson) to hide out after something goes horribly wrong back in London. Ray and Ken both have different reactions to their arrival in Bruges. Ken feels compelled to do some sightseeing while Ray seeks more exciting things, such as pubs and women. But in spite of their almost conflicting companionship, they manage to work together and stay on the down-low at least for a limited amount of time. After stumbling upon a surprisingly abstract cinematic set, Ray becomes interested in a person of intriguing proportions, leading him to a seemingly classic Belgian woman. After momentarily recollecting on the horrible past of what occurred in London, Ray's course of direction with a level head begins to alter, ultimately throwing the plot for one of many disturbingly creative twists. As the movie progresses, a series of unexpected events continue to occur and eventually result in a temporary separation for partners in crime, Ken and Ray. While the hitmen separate themselves, a new problem emerges when their boss, Harry (Ralph Fiennes), shows up in Bruges to take care of some unfinished business. Needless to say, this movie is one that has to be seen to be believed and leaves you with an ending that will yield a mixture of jaw-dropping, heart-pounding emotions. For those who have a mild tolerance for gore but constantly indulge in action flicks, this movie will suit you fairly well. For those who are easily affected by a sudden change of emotion, this film may not be for you.
