The Entrepreneurial Management Center within the College of Business Administration has received a $100,000 gift toward conducting research. It was given by the Foundation for Enterprise Development as a Beyster Fellowship. San Diego State is the first school to receive a gift from the program. The EMC helps provide tools and skills necessary for the regional entrepreneurial community for venture creation and growth. The foundation's president Mary Ann Beyster will advise faculty on the research. "This is great for San Diego… I want San Diego to be highlighted across the nation for what they're doing," Beyster said. The research will focus on employee ownership such as organizational inclusiveness and the performance impacts of equity distribution practices. It will specifically look at San Diego's privately-held life science and technology companies. "It is for research to be done and teaching materials to be developed … like how companies in San Diego are sharing, distributing stock at auction with their employees," Beyster said. Faculty will be able to develop teaching modules and mini case studies that can be incorporated into coursework. The research will start next month and be completed in a year. Faculty members Gangaram Singh, Beth Chung-Herrera, Karen Ehrhart and Lynn Shore will conduct the research. "The need for the study and research of employee ownership within corporations is crucial for determining future growth for the San Diego economic region," Beyster said in an interview. Qualcomm Executive Director for the EMC Sanford Ehrlich said there is a possibility graduate students could be hired to assist in conducting surveys. Ehrlich also said they hope to get this information to train future students who want to start a life science company and have employee ownership. The Foundation for Enterprise Development was created by Dr. J.R. Beyster in 1986 to promote business principles and practices that encourage free enterprise.
