About 100 students will gather this Sunday to participate in various community service projects throughout San Diego County as part of the 11th annual Mitzvah Day celebration.

Hillel of San Diego and the Jewish Student Union at San Diego State organizes the event each year to get students involved in improving their community.

"A mitzvah is a good deed, or commandment," said Hannah Berman, the Jewish Campus Service Corps Fellow at Hillel. "It's also an opportunity for us to fulfill our responsibility to better the world."

Projects vary in scope and type and include food collection for Mama's Kitchen, restoration of nature trails throughout San Diego and visiting with seniors at retirement villages in North County.

"It's a great way for students to spend their Sunday making a difference," Berman said.

JSU Executive Vice President Alexi Biener will be volunteering at Stelzer Park on Sunday, cleaning trails for visitors to the area.

"It's important for students to do something for others and not be so focused on themselves," Biener said. "Mitzvah Day is a really rewarding experience."

This is the first year that students can register for service projects online and the first 80 students to register will receive a free T-shirt.

Project start times vary throughout the day on Sunday, and each project will last about two to four hours. Food will be provided for participants free of charge at Hillel, which is located at 5742 Montezuma Road. Visit www.hillelsd.org for more information.
