Charity and competitive edge will coincide this Friday when the Students In Free Enterprise, Finance and Investment Society and the Associated Business Student Council take a trip to Tijuana, Mexico, to aid poor children at the City of Angels orphanage. Students in these organizations will meet Friday and head down to the orphanage to supply the children there with new clothing, foods and funds collected from San Diego State students. It will be the first time that these students visit the orphanage and may become an event that occurs every semester. "We are looking not just for cash donations but (also) food donations for school-aged children," MSBA graduate student and SIFE graduate adviser Conner Dohner said. "We plan to just hang out with the kids there and establish that relationship for years to come." The volunteers are hoping to learn as much about the organization and the children as they can to have a better idea of what their needs are should they make future trips. The project in Mexico is a part of an annual competition that these SDSU students participate in with the national SIFE program. In early April, they will compete in the regional competition based on projects done throughout the year with goals such as improving entrepreneurial education and ethics. The competition is judged by CEOs of major corporations and is an opportunity not just for business majors, but any student hoping to build contacts with these large companies. Dohner said they are looking for any new volunteers to assist in Friday's trip. You do not have to be a business major to volunteer and the group is looking for other majors in order to branch out. The SIFE program participates in other community action programs and works closely with San Diego High School to teach students about business education. Some members of SIFE will also be giving these students a tour of SDSU's campus on Friday. Students who wish to donate clothing, food or cash to the City of Angels orphanage can drop it off at BAM 451 to Angelica.
