Aztecs Attempt to Make Some History

Two San Diego State doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals atthe ITA Southern California Championships at Irvine over the weekend.

The victories give SDSU a chance at a first in program history.

Should one of the doubles teams advance to and win tonight’sfinal, it would move on to the USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships inFebruary. That would mark the first time that an Aztec has advancedpast the regional championships and to the nationals.

“This shows that we have a very deep team,” said SDSU head coachPeter Mattera. “Now we’re more excited for the spring than we alreadywere.”

Sophomore Katja Karrento and senior Whitney Wells trailed early intheir second-round match against Pepperdine’s Dorothee Kurz and MarenMueller, but came back to win 9-7. The victory propelled them intoyesterday’s quarterfinal match.

Karrento and Wells made their way into the second round bydefeating Teresa Simonyan and Kendra Segura of Cal State NorthridgeSaturday, 8-4.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were sophomores LindseyHedberg and Sylvia Tornier, who dispatched with Danielle Hustedt andKate Romm of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo rather easily, 8-4. Friday, theAztecs’ pair advanced to the second round with an 8-3 win againstCindy Ammann and Shannon Wilkins of UC Santa Barbara.

Tornier was the only SDSU player to advance past Friday’s firstand second rounds on the individual side. She lost a hotly contestedmatch to USC’s Jewel Peterson, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in the fourth roundSaturday.

Tornier’s strong showing in the tournament may earn her a nationalranking in the ITA Preseason poll, a remarkable accomplishment as shehas not played a regular-season match for the Aztecs.
