A woman carrying a bag of groceries was fatally struck by a sportutility vehicle as she crossed a dark roadway in the College AreaMonday night.
Police said the driver of the Lexus SUV was driving at the speedlimit westbound on Alvarado Road, near Reservoir Drive, at 6:15 p.m.
The woman was in the lane, midblock when she was hit, police said.The woman was taken to an area hospital and died 45 minutes later.
Police said the driver of the vehicle will not be held accountablebecause the woman walked into the path of the vehicle and the drivercould not avoid hitting her.
The woman appeared to be in her mid 60s or 70s. She did not haveidentification with her.
