Senior forward Jerome Habel was dismissed from the San Diego State men’s basketball team on Friday for violating team policy.

Habel, who transferred to SDSU from San Bernardino Valley College before the 2006-07 season and has played for seven schools in the past six years, was a major factor in the Aztecs’ run to the 2007 NIT Tournament.

“Jerome didn’t live up to his responsibilities, and as a result of that, he has been dismissed from the team,” head coach Steve Fisher said.

According to a high-ranking SDSU athletics official, Habel’s problems were not related to drugs or academics. The basketball team has rules that all of its players must follow, the official continued, and Habel, a 2006 honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference player, was dismissed because of his failure to adhere to those rules.

Habel’s expulsion comes as a surprise despite his past transgressions.

Habel was suspended for violating team rules for the first four games of the 06-07 season but played in every remaining contest and averaged 10.9 points and 6.2 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game.

He was considered the Aztecs’ most likely NBA prospect.

Junior forward Ryan Amoroso will likely be responsible for replacing Habel’s on-court production.
