WOMEN’S GOLF: Third place finish for youthful Aztecs

A drink from the fountain of youth wasn’t enough for the San Diego State women’s golf team this week.

With four freshmen, two of whom started on the ‘A’ squad, SDSU finished in third place with a 65-over 641 on Tuesday in the La Quinta Inn and Suites Mountain Shootout in Flagstaff, Ariz.

“I was not extremely happy with the results,” head coach Felicia Brown said. “You could ask the girls and they’ll say they could have done much better and I’d agree, but I am optimistic. It was the first time for the freshmen traveling and competing in uniform, and they could have done better.”

Freshman Samantha Roberts fared relatively well, finishing the two-day event tied for seventh with a 15-over 159. Freshman Stephanie Arcala finished tied for 23rd with a 21-over 165.

“The freshmen met my expectations pretty well, and we as a team will get better and better as the season goes on,” Brown said. “The team is at a level we’ve never been before with a lot of talent and depth, we just need to execute.”

Junior Jackie Kazarian posted the best score for the Aztecs with a 13-over 157, good enough for third place. She led SDSU’s ‘B’ team to fifth place out of nine teams.

Sophomore Ashley Wood had an impressive showing in the second round, posting a career-best 1-over 73. That score gave her an impressive 19-stroke turnaround from a disappointing first round.

The overall top score came from Sophia Choi with a 7-over 151. She paced the way for Northern Arizona, who won the event with a 55-over 631. New Mexico State finished in second, just one stroke behind the Lumberjacks.

The Aztecs have a week and a half before their next tournament, the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational on Oct. 1-2 at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Broomfield, Colo.
