SDSU will attempt to regain confidence against LMU

Coming off a disappointing first loss of the season, it would be valid to think the San Diego State women’s tennis team’s confidence level may have dipped. After falling to No. 55 University of Washington by a score of 6-1 last weekend, many would think SDSU just doesn’t believe in itself anymore. But after competing hard, head coach Peter Mattera begs to differ.”I think the confidence on the team remains quite high (after last weekend against Washington),” Mattera said. “We don’t look at (the match against UW) as any kind of a setback. I think that the mood afterward was that the team was upset because of the 6-1 loss and they knew they can play better.”And with a similarly ranked No. 69 Loyola Marymount University team coming to the Aztec Tennis Center on Wednesday, Mattera believes the loss to the Huskies may actually have helped the team. “The thing we can learn from the mistakes of (last week’s match) and improve upon against LMU is once you’ve got yourself a bit of a lead, you need to play with the same effort and confidence level instead of hanging back and hoping the other person will lose to you,” Mattera said. After leading the series history against the Lions with a 14-2 record, the Aztecs (3-1) will be looking for revenge, as last year LMU won at home by a score of 4-3, beating SDSU for the first time since 2004.”The match last year against LMU left us with a sour taste in our mouths,” Mattera said. “We hadn’t lost to them in quite a while and we didn’t play very well that day. It was an unpleasant day all the way around at LMU and I think a few of the girls will be looking to avenge that loss.”In order for the Aztecs to avoid a repeat of last year’s matchup, they will need to control LMU’s senior standout Pavla Mesterova, a dynamic talent who was last year named the West Coast Conference player of the year. The Prague native entered the season with a preseason singles rank of 51 and a doubles rank of 29 and looks to lead the Lions (0-3) to their first win of the season. “At number one, they have a very talented player in Mesterova,” Mattera said. “She’s a very tough out at number one and has been highly ranked during the season. (With Mesterova) and the fact that LMU is very deep, we should be in store for a pretty competitive match come Wednesday.”
