Breaking and setting records is one of the hardest things to do in collegiate sports. To set a personal-best or break a school record seems, at times, impossible. But over the weekend, the San Diego State track team proved that impossible is nothing. As they shattered personal and school records at the Bronco Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, SDSU took advantage of the indoor conditions.Eight Aztecs set and broke personal records on Friday and Saturday, with junior Decontee Kaye leading the way. She set a new school-record in the long jump by landing a leap of 20 feet, 2 1/4 inches en route to first place. Kaye also grabbed third place in the 200-meter dash, setting a career best time of 24.67 seconds. “Decontee really performed well out there,” assistant coach Jennifer Nanista said. “She didn’t miss a stride and was really going out for everything. She performed great last week and then stepped it up again this week.”But Kaye wasn’t the only SDSU competitor to find success in the long jump. Four out of the top seven spots were claimed by Aztecs who also set career-highs. Senior Karoline Koehler set a career record with a jump of 19 feet, 11 inches grabbing second, while junior Shana Watson recorded sixth place with a personal-best leap of 19 feet, 5.75 inches. Sophomore Kai Wheeler rounded out the top seven with a jump of 19 feet, 2.50 inches.”We really controlled the long jump today, and it really boosted the team’s confidence,” Nanista said. “We started off on Friday a little sluggish but really came out and kept it going on Saturday, and the long jump was one event we really took advantage of.”SDSU also had a record setting day in the 60-meter dash. Senior Sherraine Pencil finished with a personal-best 7.60 seconds finishing just behind Koehler who had a 3rd place finish with a time of 7.58 seconds. The other events in which the Aztecs set records were the weight throw and the 5,000-meter run. Junior Andrea Martinez smashed her previous career-best of 49 feet, 10 inches with an exceptional throw of 50 feet, 3.50 inches. Meanwhile, in the 5,000 meter run, junior Kristin Glen erased not only her personal record, but also the school record as she ran a time of 18 minutes, 42.37 seconds.SDSU also grabbed second place in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 3 minutes, 45 seconds, finishing only behind national champion Arizona State University.”We really stepped up from last week,” Nanista said. “We had a lot of nerves last week, especially in our first event for the freshmen and junior transfers. But we came out this week, performed at a great level and we really competed well.”We’re coming around really well and if we keep this up we’ll be able to perform well, especially against our Mountain West Conference opponents who will be tough contenders for the conference championship.”
