Vote to spend $20 for the greater good

Twenty dollars. That’s enough to buy a half tank of gas, dinner and a beer at Chili’s or two movie tickets.None of which have a direct improvement on your life, at least not beyond the immediate enjoyment of those purchases. But what can be done for twenty bucks? If you believe Associated Students, quite a lot.On March 12-13, San Diego State students will be asked to vote on whether or not to increase the student body association fee – which currently costs students $30.Of course, students are wary of spending more money for anything. Why pay $50 when you can pay $30? Well, first, the fee hasn’t been raised since 1992. What else do you know that is the same price as it was in 1992? For that matter, what is the same price as it was in 2002?Second, it’s the lowest of all such fees in the California State University system. The average fee is $129. For anyone who’s ever complained about SDSU’s programs, think about all the things $100 per student could get you. Some of the ways the money would be used include: study abroad scholarships, increased funding for student activities and programming and more events on campus. If you’re 21 or older and reading this, think back to being an 18-year-old freshman. The list of activities you could do on campus was basically party, go to a basketball game or study.Wouldn’t it be nice if there were more things to do? Remember the $20 you were spending on two movie tickets? Well the school can get a discount, so now you might be able to see 10 movies. And there’ll still be money left over to sponsor free food before a basketball game. The members of AS are understandably charged up about this, but there’s certainly plenty of reason to believe this project is well worth the cost. In addition to the $20 increase for student activities, there’s an additional boost in fees of $5 to go directly to the library. Again, it’s for the best. The library is a mad-house, especially during finals and midterms. A survey conducted two years ago showed that a number of SDSU students wanted improved facilities and increased space in the library.Well, for just $5, or less than you spent on coffee today, there’d be more study space and more computer labs. It’s hard to think of a reason not to vote for this fee, besides “I just don’t like spending money.” There were no statements published in the referendum proposing the fee increase, and no one has come forward against it since that time.If nothing else, the fee increase is just $20. Even if you spend five years here, that only translates to $100. How much is enjoying those five years worth to you?
