Aside from being told, “Your cookies gave Santa diabetes,” the worst comment to hear is, “Be realistic.” When no one thought a human could be made into a kite, the sport of parasailing was invented.

In less than a week, classes will be over and every student will walk away from the San Diego State campus to enjoy the month-long break. Although holidays are coming and “it’s the most wonderful time of the year,” the vacation is not always that great. I absolutely love Christmas time. I love decorating and baking an exorbitant amount of cookies and spiced breads that are undoubtedly not to be found anywhere on the food pyramid. My dad and I start using Baileys as our coffee creamer because, let’s face it, it goes along with the holiday spirit. And of course, I enjoy having an entire month to rid myself of tests, lectures and those lovely attendance sheets. You definitely cannot put a price tag on that.

No deaths have been reported in Cuba after the enormous Hurricane Gustav ripped through the Isla de la Juventud and Cuba’s mainland causing the evacuation of approximately 250,000 people. A Category 4 hurricane with roaring 140 mph winds, the storm landed first on the Isla de la Juventud, population 87,000, and then it touched down again on Cuba’s mainland, where the bulk of its tobacco crop is grown. Though many were reported injured, no death reports have been documented in that region. However, 81 people died in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica because of the hurricane.

The holiday season is here. This, coupled with the upcoming finals week, can equal stress times infinity, and it’s quite easy to turn to food for comfort. In an effort to amend our eating habits, we’ll start with a healthy breakfast at home, but eventually return to our old ways, ending the day with a calorie-loaded meal. I’ve decided to journal my food intake for one day to track what I eat and see whether or not my eating is powered by my need to energize or is based mostly on how I feel at that moment.
