BASEBALL: Reed’s start helps Aztecs stay afloat

The San Diego State baseball team faced off against the University of Alabama at Birmingham in a matchup that had SDSU fans on the edges of their seats until the last pitch.

After starting the game with a solid lead, the Aztecs managed to escape with an 8-7 win against UAB at Tony Gwynn Stadium Thursday night.

“It was a night where we did a lot of things right,” head coach Tony Gwynn said. “But we had to struggle to get the win.”

SDSU almost gave the game away to the Blazers, who were able to spark some late game rallies, but the Aztecs capped them just in time.

Going into the eighth inning, SDSU had an 8-0 lead and starting junior pitcher Addison Reed had only given up one hit. After Reed was taken out, UAB put seven runs on the board in two innings.

“Addy (Reed) threw the ball great,” Gwynn said. “Some things happened at the end that shouldn’t have, but we turn the page. Tomorrow’s another day, another team, another situation.”

The Aztecs took a big loss the following evening to Cal State Fullerton 11-1, and another to Fresno State 10-3.

SDSU’s record currently stands at 6-9.
