SDSU makes splash at UCI Invite

The No. 7 San Diego State  water polo team made an impressive showing at the prestigious University of California, Irvine Invitational last weekend. The Aztecs came out of the invitational with a 2-2 record.

The Aztecs opened up the weekend downing Big West Conference opponent, University of California, Santa Barbara, with a score of 11-6. Senior captain Amber Pezzolla shined against the Gauchos leading the squad with a team-high four goals.

Moving to the top tier of the tournament, the Aztecs were outmatched against the No. 2 University of Southern California in the quarterfinals, dropping the game with the score 17-5.

USC went on to win the tournament title, defeating No. 1 Stanford University.

The second day of play was full of familiar opponents for the Aztecs, as they met up with a current conference foe and a former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent.

The Aztecs looked to avenge their loss from the University of California, San Diego tournament when they crossed paths with host UCI. Hungry for revenge, SDSU upset the No. 6 Anteaters with a close score of 6-5. Co-captains Pezzolla and sophomore driver Anique Hermann led the Aztecs by combining for five of the six goals scored in the win. In the final game of the tournament, SDSU dropped a hard-fought game to No. 4 University of California, Berkeley 8-6.

Pezzolla finished the weekend with a total of nine goals, bringing her season total to a jaw-dropping 38.

The Aztecs open up Big West Conference play this weekend against UCI at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Aztec Aquaplex. Admission is free.
