Aztecs go 2-2 in Classic, defeat BYU and CSULB

The Aztecs returned home last weekend to co-host the San Diego Classic I with the University of San Diego. The Aztecs finished 2-2 in the tournament. San Diego State now stands at 10-9 overall on the season.

Game 1: SDSU 9, BYU 1

This game featured two teams that combined to win the last eight Mountain West championships. The Aztecs got out to an early start with a 1-0 lead in the second. In addition, the Aztecs blasted the game open, scoring four runs in the third and fifth innings and ending the game because of the run-rule. Junior designated player Lorena Bauer went 4-for-4 from the plate with three doubles, which tied an NCAA record. Freshman pitcher Danielle O’Toole only allowed one run on seven hits, a walk and struck out seven to pick up the win.

Game 2: Long Beach State 5, SDSU 4

In one of the most competitive and hard-fought games played all season, the Aztecs dropped their first game of the tournament. After leading 4-3 going into the sixth inning, the Aztecs suffered a heartbreaking defeat. O’Toole, who relieved starting pitcher Rebecca Arbino, gave up two runs in the sixth inning as the Long Beach State 49ers (11-6) grabbed the victory. SDSU outhit Long Beach State 11-9, thanks to three big hits from junior outfielder Patrice Jackson, who also scored a run. The Aztecs overcame adversity throughout the whole game, rallying back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits earlier in the game.

Game 3: SDSU 4, Utah State 1

On a special day at the SDSU Softball Stadium, the Aztecs won their annual “Pink Game” against a struggling Utah State (0-20) squad. Before the game, cancer survivor Carla Schueler threw out the first pitch to begin the game. The SDSU coaching staff received a special community service award after raising more than $10,000 throughout the past five years while raising awareness for breast cancer research. The Aztecs started the game with three runs in the first inning, all with two outs on the scoreboard. Bauer got the ball rolling for the Aztecs with a deep double into right field to bring home junior second baseman Katie Mathis. Senior catcher Kristin May jacked a ball off the left field fence that scored Bauer and Jackson, who singled previously in the inning. To cap the game off, May brought in her sister, senior first baseman Kamerin May, on a groundout in the seventh inning to secure the Aztecs’ victory. O’Toole (4-4) picked up the win on the mound. This truly was a special day for SDSU softball.

Game 4: No. 12/10 UCLA 7, SDSU 0

Going into the final game of the tournament, the Aztecs knew they would have a challenge on their hands facing nationally ranked University of California, Los Angeles. SDSU had chances to take the lead with the bases loaded in the second inning and with a runner on third to end the third inning, but could not capitalize. Unfortunately, the Bruins’ bats came alive in the fifth inning, as sophomore infielder Stepany LaRosa smashed her sixth home run of the season to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. From that point on, it was all UCLA, as the Bruins (18-2) tallied five more runs to secure the victory. The Bruins outhit the Aztecs 14-7, giving starter senior pitcher Arbino (6-5) the loss. After competing in four consecutive tournaments, the Aztecs (10-9) dropped six of nine losses to ranked teams.
