Aztecs headed to NIT, will face UCSB first

The San Diego State women’s basketball team had a hard loss against Fresno State last Saturday at the 2013 Reese’s Mountain West Women’s Basketball Championship game. But now, the Aztecs have moved on and are preparing to battle the University of California, Santa Barbra in the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament tonight at Viejas Arena.

It’s SDSU’s fourth postseason appearance in five years. However, the Aztecs haven’t participated in the WNIT since the 1989-90 season, when SDSU defeated Radford University and Murray State University in the first two rounds, but lost 67-64 to the University of Oregon in the championship finals.

There will be 64 Division I teams competing in this years WNIT, 36 of which have records of 20 or more wins.

SDSU has an overall record of 26-6 and captured the outright MW regular-season title. Its 17 consecutive wins also combined for school’s second-longest unbeaten streak and tied the program’s record for wins in a single season.

While in the Big West Conference, the Gauchos have been having a difficult season. UCSB had a 16-16 overall record and an 11-7 conference record.
