Alek’s Picks

GTA

Powerhouse duo GTA sets its sights on downtown San Diego’s nightclub, Bang Bang. The show is accompanied by rising duo What So Not, whose melodic buildups are a perfect tie in for GTA. Aptly titled the “Death to Genres Tour,” GTA is bringing a flurry of sounds for the crowd. Aiming to deliver a musical journey, GTA’s range can deliver the heaviest electro to the deepest of house. If you didn’t catch the duo’s New Year’s Countdown performance at this year’s OMFG! NYE 2014, you don’t want to miss this show. Come on down to Bang Bang this Thursday to catch GTA on the decks.

Free the Sea

March 19 is the perfect night to go out clubbing for a cause. Fluxx nightclub is hosting a special “Free the Sea” performance with all proceeds going toward the International Marine Mammal Project to support its cause in ending the capture and captivity of orcas and whales. Australian sisters NERVO are set to headline the event, accompanied by their friends Michael Woods, Chris Lake, FunkGenda and others to be announced. “Free the Sea” is the perfect opportunity to have some fun all while supporting a great cause.

“Initial Conditions”

On March 14, the coffee bar Coffee and Tea Collective will offer the perfect combination for a Friday night: photos and pizza. The coffee bar will host “Initial Conditions,” a photo show presenting the work of Terry Easlick. The Collective describes Easlick’s work as photography capturing “a certain Americana vibe” while also keeping it local in San Diego. A pop-up event featuring Tribute Pizza will also be present to serve free pizza with a suggested donation that will go towards the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi. The free event lasts from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

 “The Squid and the Whale”

The San Diego Central Library is showing director Noah Baumbach’s 2005 film “The Squid and the Whale” on Sunday, March 16. Loosely based on Baumbach’s own childhood, the story follows two Brooklyn boys coping with the divorce of their parents in the 1980s. The film screening is part of the new series “Surviving Life’s Transitions” by Dr. Monika-Maria Grace, clinical psychologist and author of “Reel Fulfillment: Transforming Your Life through Movies.” Admission is free and the screening starts at 2 p.m.
