SDSU goes 3-0 in Invitational

The No. 7 San Diego State women’s water polo team went undefeated this past weekend as the host for the annual Aztec Invitational. SDSU opened up its weekend of play by defeating the University of California, Davis 9-7 last Friday in a Big West Conference game.

It was a close win for The Aztecs, as they were tied with the Aggies at seven, until sophomore utility Taelor Moreno scored back-to-back goals to propel the Aztecs to a victory. By defeating UC Davis, SDSU improved its Big West Conference record to 2-1.

With the sun shining down on the Aztec Aquaplex, SDSU opened its tournament play facing off against Bucknell University last Saturday morning. Ten different Aztecs scored in the win against the Bison, giving SDSU an 11-3 win.

Highlighting the defensive side of play for the Aztecs, freshman goalie Rachel Mitchell and sophomore goalie Morgan Klingfus split time in the cage, both recording seven saves each.

The No. 11 Indiana University Hoosiers gave SDSU a run for its money Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs went up on the Hoosiers 3-0 in the first quarter of play, but Indiana came roaring back, scoring five unanswered goals in the second quarter. It would be a game of tit and tat until sophomore driver Anique Hermann took the game into her hands. Hermann scored four goals for SDSU in the second half of play, ultimately leading the Aztecs to a close 12-11 decision.

On the final day of the Aztec Invitational, SDSU took on No. 12 Princeton University in front of a mixed crowd of fans. The Aztecs controlled the tempo of the game from the start by playing an effective zone defense against the Tigers.

Offensively, SDSU scored from all angles of the pool, proving the team’s diverse range of plays inside two meters and on the perimeter. Moreno shined for the red and black as she recorded a hat trick in the 10-7 win against the Tigers.

The Aztecs have this week to prepare for a home game against Big West Conference foe Long Beach State. The 49ers will take on SDSU at 4 p.m. this Friday at the Aztec Aquaplex.
