FOOTBALL: News and notes from day four
8/13/10 2:47 AM
Day four of 2010 fall camp looked a lot like day three: helmets and shoulder pads only, no leg pads. Nonetheless, there were still plenty of news and notes from the fourth day of training camp. The best 11 will play Most coaches would never let their all-stars even think about playing on special teams. But on Thursday afternoon, superstar receiver Vincent Brown was working as a gunner in special teams drills, shedding would-be defenders and getting after faux punt returners. "We've got to have the best team of guys on the field playing," Hoke said. "That’s part of it – that’s one-third of the football game. If there’s some guys who are competent and competitive in that, we’ll find places for guys that we trust. But you have to have your best...FOOTBALL: Day three news and notes

Take a look at some of the news and notes from day three. Football can be fun, too He may look like a man who's never turned down a fight and he may sound like a man who's swallowed a truck-load of gravel, but San Diego State football head coach Brady Hoke knows how to have a little fun. Hoke has made pre-practice stretches enjoyable to watch. He goes from player to player, usually making some sort of wisecrack. Before practice and stretches start, the quarterbacks go to the turf field to throw footballs with the tight ends and receivers who don't play on special teams. Everyone else, meanwhile, works on their special teams' craft. When it comes time for team stretches, the quarterbacks and receivers come jogging to the grass field, and they're met with a little ribbing from the...FOOTBALL: News and notes from day two

Even though the Aztecs weren't practicing in full pads again on Tuesday, there were still plenty of news and notes from the second day of camp. Deonte Williams not in camp Running back Deonte Williams was a three-star recruit who chose SDSU over New Mexico State, Arkansas and Arizona. Now, after dealing with some academic issues, the Aztecs may not see him in an SDSU uniform until January at best. Head coach Brady Hoke said on Tuesday the transfer running back from Sierra College won't compete for the Aztecs this season after there was a "mix-up" with his academics when he transferred to SDSU. "It’s a real strange case; it’s really not the kid's fault," Hoke said. "He took summer school and got a 3.2. They had a mix-up somewhere ... It’s...FOOTBALL: Day one news and notes

They left their shoulder pads and leg pads in the locker room, but nonetheless, the San Diego State Aztecs kicked off fall camp with an hour-and-a-half, helmets-only practice. Check out some of the news and notes from day one. A slimmer 'Aztec' Defensive coordinator Rocky Long changed Andrew Preston’s position from linebacker to Aztec, and Preston had just one question for Long: “How much do you want me to weigh?” At the time, Preston was 215 pounds. He was eating five or six meals a day, plus snacks. He even chugged down a protein shake every night before bed. “I don’t care,” Long told him. “As long as you are looking good and playing good out there, it doesn’t matter how much you weigh.” So Preston went out to...FOOTBALL: Boise State joins the Mountain West
6/11/10 2:10 PM
The mountain just got a little bit bigger. On Friday morning, the Mountain West Conference added football powerhouse Boise State to its institution, making it the 10th member in the league. "We are pleased and excited to welcome Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference," MWC commissioner Craig Thompson said in a press release. "Since our inception just 11 short years ago, the Mountain West has experienced tremendous success, and the addition of Boise State will further enhance that strength. The MWC continues to strategize regarding potential membership scenarios and bringing Boise State into the Conference is an important part of that evolution." The Broncos will not officially become members of the conference until July 1, 2011. They are the...
