While some of the most memorable and exciting exhibitions to come through the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego have featured street art and graffiti, the latest works on display demonstrate art of a different sort.
Would anyone know exactly how to feel once they enter the San Diego State University Art Gallery, located right here on campus, to see the latest exhibition on display, “feeling-of-knowing”? Probably not, because this is an unusual one.
Few people know there is a genuine living legend residing quietly in the art department. Graduate student Lee Jaffe has done it all, from producing reggae records to documenting Brazilian MMA fighters, and recently published a book of his photos and writings from the past decades.
Instead of canvas, some artists use bricks and mortar. Instead of an easel, some artists stand on cement and use the urban landscape to guide them. Since the explosion of street and graffiti art in the 1970s, the best artists have been celebrated on the same level as those who work in the studio.
