San Diego State’s School of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences had an Open House last Friday to celebrate its 70th anniversary and a new building.
The Open House hosted free speech-language and hearing screenings in the morning and tours of the academic, clinic and research facilities in the afternoon along with a ceremony and reception to celebrate the event.
The newly renovated building has been the home of the School of SLHS for less than a year, according to Beverly Wulfeck, director of the School of SLHS.
“Today, this afternoon, we’re going to have all of our labs and all of the classrooms set up so that people can come and see what the students and faculty have been doing,” Wulfeck said before the event.
The new clinic features examination rooms with one-way mirrors to observe patients and a large video viewing room with a multi-screen panel to record and monitor exams.
“This is really exciting in the new building,” Wulfeck said. “We’ve never had this before to be able to record and have everything (on) DVD and new technology.”
The clinic offers assessments to SDSU students and faculty as well as surrounding community members.
“Our master’s (degree) students … provide services around the community at schools and hospitals for children and adults with speech language problems,” Wulfeck said.
“Whether they are developmental disorders, autism, other languages or adults who have strokes and have cognitive decline.”
The Open House showcased research from graduate and honors undergraduate students. The honors undergraduate students presented their research to SLHS faculty in the Undergraduate Honors Symposium and also alongside graduate students at the recent Student Research Symposium.
“They did such a good job,” Wulfeck said. “Our undergraduates are just fearless.”
Students and faculty who would like to get assessed for speech, language or hearing concerns can receive testing at the SLHS clinic.
