San Diego State is participating in the this year’s Colleges Rock Hunger campaign against UC San Diego, the University of San Diego and CSU San Marcos, to benefit the San Diego Food Bank. Four student groups at SDSU, including the Greek community, the Residence Halls, the athletic teams and organizations represented on the Multi-Cultural Caucus, are participating in the challenge.

Standards of Excellence trophies were given out to the highest-rated chapters of each of the four councils in the Greek system last Saturday at San Diego State’s Homecoming. The winners were rated by a point system based on chapter management, external relations including community service and involvement, membership development and compliance with policy.

The Greek Life Activities Board is a new Greek organization forming this semester at San Diego State. The board will be compromised of one to two members from every Greek chapter recognized by SDSU Student Life and Leadership. The board will work with the Greek Council Activities Directors to plan and administer Greek activities throughout this academic year. It will replace Homecoming and Greek Week delegate and executive boards.

All four Greek councils have elected new presidents. Tinebeta Mekonnen, who serves on the executive board of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and the National Pan-Hellenic Council executive board, was elected NPHC president. “I feel privileged to be president and to be working with so many great leaders,” Mekonnen, a public health senior, said.

Community cleanup Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity will be working with the Good Neighbor Program to help clean up the community this Saturday. Sigma Phi Epsilon’s vice president of communication, Sean Kashanchi, said this isn’t the first time the fraternity has worked with the program.

Latino and Latina Greeks gave back to the children of Casa Hogar Sion, an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. Earlier this school year, Alpha Pi Sigma Sorority and Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity raised funds to buy supplies for the orphanage. The two organizations teamed up again to visit the children.

Multicultural Night Upsilon Kappa Delta sorority will host its 3rd Annual Multicultural Night this evening. Multicultural Night is a night of cultural food and entertainment from various cultures. Public health junior Allyson Dunn is Upsilon Kappa Delta’s multicultural chair. Dunn said the event is a way to help make the community aware of different cultures. “Because we are a multicultural sorority, we strive to reach as many different cultures as we can. We want to provide the San Diego State community, and the San Diego community, an opportunity to see different aspects of many different cultures,” Dunn said.

The Interfraternity Council has decided to expand. On Feb. 5, in a vote of 7-to-2, fraternity chapters voted in favor of bringing three new fraternities to San Diego State during the next three years. IFC will add one new fraternity each year. Accepting a third fraternity, however, will be contingent on the success of the first two.
