On Saturday, at the Aztec Aquaplex, the SDSU swimming and diving team defeated Fresno State, 152-126.

With all of the hard work they have put forth in recent weeks, the San Diego State swim and dive team earned a much needed victory against a Fresno State squad in its inaugural year. Coming off of a tough loss against division rival Colorado State, SDSU cruised to an easy 152-126 win at the Aztec Aquaplex on Saturday.

The Aztecs were led by sophomore Brooke Vessey, who recorded three-first place finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle as well as the 200-yard individual medley.

“I was real proud of our girls today,” head coach Mike Shrader said. “I thought we did a great job all around.”

Shrader used the opportunity against the Bulldogs to have his swimmers compete in off-events that they wouldn’t normally compete in.

It was a good chance for the coach to see how his team would respond in events some racers may be swimming when the conference championships roll around in February. Captain Jessica Morrill, normally a 100-yard breast stroke swimmer, was up to the coach’s challenge and had two first-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle. Kyla Power also chipped in with two first-place finishes in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.

Other scorers for the meet included Bojana Duric in the 200-yard freestyle and Lisa Tompkins in the 100-yard breaststroke. Though he had his girls swim in some different events, Shrader admitted that the Bulldogs were no pushovers.
“I think they’re doing an outstanding job for their first year,” Shrader said. “They have a great coaching staff over there.”

The dive team, which was scheduled to compete at USC on Saturday, ended up returning to the Aquaplex to join its teammates and compete against Fresno State. The divers were led by Alexandra Barstad, who won both the one-meter and three-meter events with season-best scores of 240.67 and 238.8.

Megan Flanagan also set a new season-best with scores of 225.9 and 231.07 in the one- and three-meter events, respectively.

The victory puts SDSU at a 3-2 record on the season after completing its first five matches of the year in its home pool at the Aztec Aquaplex. Its next meet will be against Mountain West rivals UNLV and BYU in Irvine this upcoming Saturday.
