The San Diego State men’s tennis team is playing with swagger, dominating its opponents with the kind of confidence that can only come from a long winning streak. SDSU’s prowess was on full display Sunday morning as it ousted defending Mountain West Conference champion New Mexico, 4-3, recording its fifth straight victory.
Before the San Diego State men’s tennis season had even started, head coach Gene Carswell was already strategizing. Looking to gain an advantage against other Mountain West Conference opponents, Carswell created a rigorous schedule that featured mostly ranked teams.
There was absolutely no way senior Juan Gomez would let history repeat itself. Last year, against the same opponent, Gomez lost a heartbreaking three-set match. But now, with the victory on the line, he was ready. Gomez won the final singles match against No. 66 TCU (7-8, 1-1 in Mountain West Conference play) and clinched the 4-3 victory for the San Diego State men’s tennis team in SDSU’s MWC opener at the Aztec Tennis Center.
In week three of the young San Diego State men’s tennis season, SDSU head coach Gene Carswell made an adjustment that would end up leveling the playing field between the Aztecs and the elite teams in the country for the rest of the year.
The San Diego State men’s tennis team traveled to the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in hopes of doing something that it had done only once all year: beat a nationally ranked team.
Things didn’t go as planned, as SDSU (3-10) lost to No. 17 Oklahoma 4-0 and No. 66 South Florida 4-1, but came back to beat Furman University 4-3 in Montgomery, Ala. Saturday.
In a match that was as blistering as the afternoon sun, the San Diego State men’s tennis team could not protect its home court against No. 34 Arizona. With the temperature in the upper-70s, SDSU (2-8) lost 5-2 to the Wildcats (9-4) Monday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The match started out with the Aztecs’ team strength: doubles play.
Aztecs beat Broncos 5-2
It must be the home cooking. The San Diego State men’s tennis team dominated in both doubles and singles on Saturday morning as it cruised to a 5-2 victory against No. 66 Boise State at the Aztec Tennis Center, marking its second victory at home.
Once each year, San Diego State men’s tennis head coach Gene Carswell has the opportunity to pick up a racket with his team and challenge some of the best college tennis teams in the country. This year, Carswell and SDSU (1-7) had mixed success at the 121st Pacific Coast Doubles Championship held March 5 through 7 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
In Sunday’s match against UC Santa Barbara, the San Diego State men’s tennis team’s toughest opponent was almost the rainy weather. "We had to work hard to get this match in today,” head coach Gene Carswell said. “Our guys even had to push water off the court with squeegees before the match. It was literally a team effort today.” On Sunday afternoon, when SDSU battled a delay lasting more than two hours, the Aztecs (1-5) defeated UCSB 4-2 at the Aztec Tennis Center and picked up their first win of the season.
