How she fits: Less than two years ago, head coach Carin Crawford announced that she had signed a trio of players from Chino Hills Area Water Polo (CHAWP): Amber Pezzolla, Alex Ford and Courtney Muller.
SDSU will take on Arizona State in Tempe on Saturday
There may just be one conference game left for the San Diego State water polo team, but it means a lot to SDSU. Not only will a victory prevent the team from having its first winless season in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, but it will also give the Aztecs the No. 7 seed in the MPSF Championships.
With a minute remaining before halftime, the San Diego State water polo team trailed Cal Baptist by three goals.
SDSU was within reach of the Lancers, but needed a momentum boost going into the half.
Junior driver Sarah Brady provided that boost, scoring as time expired to get the Aztecs back in the game.
The San Diego State water polo team said good-bye to a lot of talent during the off-season. Erinn Greenwood, Anna Gonzales and Jenna Schuster all combined for 196 goals last season, and now they are gone. SDSU has reloaded this season and started the year well, though. Through 11 games, the Aztecs are 8-3 and own victories against No. 3 UCLA and No. 11 UC Irvine.
After falling to UC Irvine, SDSU rebounds against Long Beach State
The San Diego State water polo team can explain last weekend’s games in two words: Déjà vu. “Friday was a tough loss because it was mostly mistakes we made,” head coach Carin Crawford said. “Saturday was a much needed win, and we improved in a lot of areas that we struggled with. It’s good to end the weekend on a winning note.”
On Sunday morning, the eighth-ranked San Diego State water polo team faced No. 13 Hartwick in La Jolla. With a win against the Hawks, SDSU had a chance to repeat as Triton Invitational champions. But after leading 9-6 at halftime, the Aztecs were caught off guard by a resilient Hartwick squad in the second half. SDSU was outscored 6-2 in the second half, and was shut out 3-0 in the fourth quarter, sealing a heartbreaking 12-11 loss.
