STAFF EDITORIAL: A.S., reconsider the smoking ban

Next month, our elected representatives at Associated Students will be introducing a bill to heavily regulate the conduct of students who choose to smoke. The proposed changes, drafted by the Environment and Safety Committee, would isolate users into designated smoking areas. Citing the inconsistencies between the California State University system’s policies and those enforced at San Diego State, A.S. seems determined to “fix” this smoking problem as they see fit. STAFF EDITORIAL: SDSU should fire Professor Burns

Students trust their professors. We recognize they’re human; sometimes circumstances get outside their control and things don’t go as planned, just like they do for us. The recent arrest of Associated Students President James Poet, especially so soon after the much-publicized drug bust last spring, has hit San Diego State with a vengeance. Poet is the public face of the student body; he very much represents SDSU students in the mind of the community. His actions, intentional or not, fairly or not, are reflected upon all of us. Americans have been watching the news desperately, biting their nails as they watch the economy crumbling around them. Business owners, parents and the middle class are holding on tight to their pocketbooks and watching in horror as the massive $700 billion bailout bill is shoveled around Congress. For most college students, this is no make or break issue, unless their loved ones are losing a house. Students couldn't be more wrong. Or more ignorant. Full story

STAFF EDITORIAL: Freebie or not, vandalism isn't acceptable

Last Tuesday, hundreds of copies of The Daily Aztec were found torn in half inside numerous dispensers around campus. The police were called in the hope this act of vandalism would not go unpunished. With some effort, security cameras or witnesses could lead to the culprits. Full story
