ANYA'S CITY SCENE: Take advantage of the many musical offerings in San Diego

Midterms on the horizons do not do much to help with the stress levels students might be feeling these last few weeks. Whether it’s the declining economy or the weather change that is taking its toll, there are a few things that might cheer even the most humdrum souls. Full story

The last couple weeks of freedom are upon us as we embark on yet another semester here at beautiful San Diego State. The bookstore full of hopeful students, the residence halls filled with clueless freshmen and the city of San Diego: a playground for the procrastinating college student. These tough economic times call for stiff entertainment measures, which is this week’s theme. Here is a week of entertainment for the tight-budgeted, which will feature simply rad (and free) music. So, if you’re having a crappy week because you unfortunately sat next to a swine flu infectee, maybe a weekend of music and movies will cheer you up. Don’t worry, slap a white mask on your mug and get out there like the rest of us, because the H1N1 virus is no more a threat than mono was for me freshman year in the residence halls. Kidding. But seriously, I think that health ship has sailed. Full story

It’s that time of the year where one’s mind can’t seem to differentiate the weekdays and weekends. You may find yourself going out on a random Sunday afternoon in lieu of any real work you should be doing. Anyone (including yours truly) may get the urge to blow off responsibilities at any time just to have a few hours of auditory satisfaction. The itch to go out is heavily harbored during the last few weeks of the semester, and you’re probably no exception. Full story

If you’re one of those unfortunate souls who will not be spending this weekend in glorious central California for the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, take a look at these local events instead of feeling left out of the Southern California musical loop. Full story

It’s the week before the debauchery that is Spring Break. Oh, what will it be filled with? Depending on your vacation plans for the following week, there are all sorts of things to do. If you’re going to ditch this overcast “San Diego” weather and spend your break in Mexico, I’d recommend a week filled with brushing up on Spanish basics and buying UV protective goop. But if you’re like me and are going to spend your vacation in an even more overcast Philadelphia, playing enthralling games such as Gin Rummy and Mahjong with a set of cute Jewish grandparents, you might want to get your kicks out this week. No matter what your plans are for Spring Break, celebrate the end of midterms with a few live shows around the town with good buddies and tasty brews. Full story

Tuesday 3/10: For all you vixens out there, Bar Pink in North Park will be hosting the Hell on Heels Tour featuring San Francisco trio Von Iva, Brooklyn-based Semi Precious Weapons and the Los Angeles garage band, Killola. Viewer warning: These bands will cause you to dance till you drop, as well as induce a glam-rock fever that may last several days. According to Von Iva’s Web site, this tour will be “burning you alive.” I absolutely presume this to be true, which is why I’m going to wear non-flammable garb for this night of dance-rock. I don’t know about you, but I am stressed. I can’t seem to focus on anything and I blame several things: First, my birthday. How can such a momentous day leave me in such an illusive reality, one in which I can’t even remember what day it is. Full story

This week beholds the festive Catholic holiday Mardi Gras, in which one celebrates by drinking, dancing and flashing (a smile, of course). Whether you’re a die-hard Catholic about to embark on a religious commemoration or just an average Joe, grab your Mardi Gras beads and hit up the town for this carnival week. Full story

There are several ways to brave the unnatural and unpredictable stormy San Diego weather. Some of my personal favorites include: Climbing in bed to watch a scary and/or morose movie, putting on some bowling shoes and groovin’ during disco bowling (trust me, try it), and of course, watching live music whilst the rain falls.  Full story
