Times are always tough for college students. The constant struggle of finding events that offer an array of sights and sounds, without coughing up cash is almost extinct. Well, almost.
The fifth-annual Smokin’ in the Park barbecue is offering free admission to those willing to soak in the smell of great barbecue and the sounds of soulful music from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, at the Viejas Casino and Outlet Center in Alpine.
The Texas Tornados will be one of the national bands fusing its quality concoction of rock, country and various Mexican styles for what should be a genuine performance. From southern east coast to southern west coast, Florida soul funk will be brought to you by JJ Grey and Mofro, whose deliberate heat of juke joint rhythms and cringing wails will send shivers down the spines of those wise enough to attend.
The best of San Diego soul will be on hand with brass master Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, whose formula of funk, hip-hop and jazz should bring the victims of food coma back to life while the best of Los Angeles, Los Lobos, will be molding its decades of craftsmanship on stage respectfully headlining the evening.
Those with enough pocket change to further enjoy the evening will be able to take advantage of vendors offering food, sauces and merchandise, while beer gardens will offer refreshing fluids to survive a day of filling grub and satisfying sounds. Proceeds of the event will support the Alpine School District’s Math and Music Program. So don’t feel obligated to hold tight to the funds, these good times will be going toward a good cause.
A worthy trip to Alpine offers a silver platter of nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
