Neighbourhood
Neighbourhood is a lot like its name implies: friendly and inviting. The lifestyle boutique, located in the diverse University Heights area, offers a well-edited selection of vintage clothing, along with an even larger selection of great mainstream and harder-to-find designers. The store stocks Anzevino & Florence’s neo-minimalist pieces, Evil Genius’ bright tees and Dolce Vita’s sassy shoes plus many more. You’ll feel right at home when shopping here.
Kate Ross
Kate Ross’ boutique is quite the charmer. The cutesy space is stocked with clothing for both men and women, all adorned with desirable labels including Ben Sherman and Howe for men, and Elwood and Mixie for women. You’ll also find quality accessories and jewelry inside. The owner is very particular about the products in her namesake boutique, much to the delight of San Diego shoppers. Make sure you check out Kate Ross Shoes just around the corner, which offers a superb collection of both casual and elegant footwear for men and women.
Fresh
Fresh recently abandoned its Hillcrest location and moved to PB where it took up shop on the trendy Garnet Avenue. The move turned out to be a good one. Fresh is now much larger and covers all the bases: women’s shoes, accessories, jewelry and clothing. The price point of the boutique is just as appealing as the clothes are. The garment district threads that line the racks are always fun to browse, and it’s highly likely you will find the perfect party dress here.
Capricorn
Style and mouthwatering designs are in the horoscope for La Jolla’s shopping scene now that Capricorn has put its star on the map. With a sign that states “Indulgences for her and him,” shopaholics are enticed by the gorgeous one-of-a-kind clothing. Owners Krissy Heinz and Lisa Ovadia, both Capricorns, dedicate their time indulging San Diego with unique clothing, gifts and accessories from designers such as WeSC, Zooey, Hussy and MK2K.
Unsteady
Unsteady’s tiny quarters on Eighth Avenue are relatively discreet: no huge sign or bright exterior here. The clothes inside it, however, are exactly the opposite. The racks are neatly stocked with extremely stylish threads: Think bright colors, daring cuts and casual, yet totally cool, everyday wear. Unsteady stocks labels such as Insight 51 , Cheap Monday and Yumi Kim, as well as other lesser-known labels make for very interesting racks. The aesthetic of the shop is as downtown as its location. The whole inside gives off an urban, uber-hip vibe, while remaining utterly fashionable and appealing.
Kingdom
New to the super-hip Hillcrest area is Kingdom, a boutique that is befitting of royalty. The aesthetic of the shop is pleasing at once: vintage chandeliers, bright green walls and dark wooden floors with red accents dotting the interior. Entering Kingdom is like traveling around the world and only seeing the best of everything. The selection of clothing is impeccable, the jewelry sparkles and the home products smell phenomenal. Funky Alex & Chloe jewelry and Korres natural beauty products are standouts truly fit for a queen.
Mimi & Red
Mimi & Red truly is the one-stop shop of North Park. It has accessories, jewelry and clothes galore, all at prices that allow you to snag a couple items on every visit. The store’s unique selection consists of both local and well-known designers. Look out for Betsey Johnson handbags and sunglasses that adorn the accessory shelves and BB Dakota’s stylish threads on the plentiful racks.
Station
One of the standout boutiques of the sophisticated Little Italy area is Station. Once inside, it becomes obvious why. The shop’s walls, painted a perky blue and affixed with vintage-style crown molding, are striking and surround a flawless selection of tasteful and eclectic clothing for both men and women. The boutique sells Plenty by Tracy Reese, Toms Shoes and Original Penguin to name a few. Merchandise is displayed on sleek black tables, comfy rust-colored velvet armchairs sit in the center of the shop and live plants brighten up the entire space.
The River
Garnet Avenue is a lengthy one, filled with restaurants, salons and, of course, boutiques. The River is one of the best, located just blocks from the ocean. The store stocks a plethora of well-known surf and skate labels for men and women that are casual and comfortable, yet very fashion forward. The layout of the store is open and easy to shop, and it’s actually quite large for a boutique. It’s the go-to boutique for Southern Californians.
Mint
Finding Mint is easy: Just look for the mint green exterior located on University Avenue. One of Hillcrest’s mainstays, Mint has incredible offerings when it comes to shoes. You’ll find Asics, Converse, PF Flyers and more plus dressier labels such as Bronx, Steve Madden and Pink Studio. The store is neatly divided down the center, with men’s on the left and women’s to the right. The walls house plenty of styles for day or night that are sure to liven your step.
