The Dane Cook comedy train has been hauling nationwide on his Global Thermo Comedy Tour, showcasing an hour-plus of new material that tosses the safety net and ventures off into a more edgy and darker routine.

On Friday night, the Boston native unleashed his comedic persona at Sports Arena.
“It’s been too long, since I’ve come down to hang with the fans in San Diego,” Cook explained. “The big step here is just being more vulnerable and real, as opposed to more, in the past, observational without much personal content; it was time to really grow up.”

The release of Cook’s latest album, “ISolated INcident,” samples his latest creations of humor and was performed and recorded at the legendary Laugh Factory, where he showed up unannounced to a crowd of only 20 patrons, unleashing his new direction of comedy while still paying homage to his energetic style.

Cook’s fresh approach in large part stems from his appreciation and study of architects of comedy. “I have pretty extensive playlists. I have everything from Woody Allen to old Laurel and Hardy stuff; the Carlin’s the Pryor’s, Sam Kinison, Bill Hicks, they all form my comedy.  I certainly want to continue to grow and I have a lot more still to learn and dig in and pull out of myself.” Cook also attributes his quest for comedic growth toward his large and loyal fan base. “When I was in my 20s I was playing colleges coming up with a generation of comedy fans that are now dealing with some the of the same things I’m dealing with in their lives.  So when I get e-mails with people saying ‘I felt like in high school you were talking to me, ‘I felt like in college you were talking to me,’ and ‘I still feel like you’re talking to me and making me laugh,’ That’s a big moment in connecting with people.” I think it’s gonna set me up for some great new moments with my fans over the next decade.” Cook’s continual development of stand-up is creating a legacy (whether you love him or hate him) for this generation of comedians and fans that could only be witnessed at San Diego Sports Arena last Friday night.
